    Base and Territory Building

The protagonist develops a place — a town, a dungeon, a guild hall — accumulating infrastructure, population, and defensive capacity. Progress is measured in construction rather than combat.

    Beast Taming and Companion Evolution

A bonded creature progresses on its own track, sometimes faster than the protagonist, and its evolution choices are a second build to manage. The companion is a character and a resource.

    Boss Fight Set-Piece

A discrete, escalated confrontation against a uniquely powerful opponent with published rules, phases, and a defined arena. Bosses punctuate the structure and certify progress.

    Broken/Overpowered Unique Class

The protagonist acquires a rare classification that operates outside normal rules, granting scaling or flexibility others cannot match. Concealment of the class is usually a survival requirement.

    Class/Job System

Characters commit to a defined role that constrains and enables their abilities, usually chosen at a threshold moment and expensive to change. Class is identity with mechanics attached.

    Crafting/Gathering System

Resource collection and item creation are systematised into a progression path parallel to combat. The crafter's power is indirect, cumulative, and dependent on other people.

    Cultivation Realms and Bottlenecks

Power is organised into named tiers separated by thresholds that require insight, resources, or trial to cross. Stalling at a bottleneck is a defined, socially visible condition.

    Death Game/Permadeath Stakes

Failure inside the system produces irreversible real consequences, usually death. The stakes are announced early, demonstrated on a named character, and never relaxed.

    Divine Patron or Sponsor

A powerful entity invests in the protagonist, providing advantages in exchange for obligation, worship, or performance. The patronage is a contract with escalating terms.

    Dungeon Crawling

Structured, hazard-filled spaces are explored floor by floor or room by room, with escalating danger and reward. The dungeon supplies a map, a clock, and a difficulty curve simultaneously.

    Evolution/Mutation Mechanic

A character or creature transforms into a categorically stronger form at defined thresholds, often trading away part of what they were. Evolution is levelling with an identity cost.

    Grinding for Power

Repetitive, unglamorous effort produces incremental gains, and the book stays with the tedium long enough for the reader to feel the investment. The genre's most divisive convention.

    Guild/Party Formation

A group with complementary builds forms for shared advancement, and its internal politics — loot distribution, credit, risk tolerance — become a persistent subplot.

    Hidden Power Level

A character deliberately conceals their true capability, either to avoid attention or to preserve a tactical advantage. Every fight becomes a decision about how much to reveal.

    Isekai (Transported to Another World)

A protagonist from a mundane world is relocated into a game-like or fantastical one, bringing modern knowledge and no relevant skills. The displacement licenses both exposition and culture shock.

    Leaderboards/Rankings

Public, comparative standing among peers converts private progress into social position. The board is an antagonist that never appears in a scene.

    Leveling Up

Quantified experience converts into discrete increases in capability. The level is a promise to the reader that effort will be legible and rewarded.

    Loot Drops/Rarity Tiers

Rewards are categorised by scarcity, giving acquisition a vocabulary and a hierarchy the reader learns quickly. Tiers create anticipation independent of what any specific item does.

    Reincarnation into a New Body/World

A character dies and begins again in another body, world, or timeline, carrying knowledge across the boundary. Memory is the inheritance and often the burden.

    Sect, Clan, and Faction Politics

Organisations compete for resources, students, and prestige, and an individual's power is inseparable from their affiliation. Standing within the group is a resource in its own right.

    Sentient Companion System/AI

An intelligent entity embedded in the System advises, taunts, or withholds, and its relationship with the protagonist becomes one of the book's primary character dynamics.

    Skill Trees/Unique Abilities

Capabilities branch from choices that foreclose alternatives, so a build is a record of decisions. Unique or hidden skills mark the protagonist as exceptional within the shared system.

    System Apocalypse

A game-like system is imposed on the real world without warning, killing most of the population and converting the survivors into participants. Civilisation ends and the tutorial begins.

    System Interface/Stat Screen

A diegetic interface displays stats, notifications, quests, and rules directly to the protagonist and the reader. The interface is a character with a voice, a policy, and often an agenda.

    The Arrogant Rival

A higher-status peer publicly humiliates the protagonist and is later defeated in front of the same audience. The pleasure is scheduled and communal.

    Time Loop Progression

A character repeats a bounded period, retaining knowledge or skill across iterations, and uses the repetition to master a challenge. The loop's rules — what carries over — are the whole design.

    Titles, Achievements, and Records

The System grants named recognitions for unusual accomplishments, which confer mechanical benefits and public status. Titles are a reward currency separate from levels.

    Tower Climb

A vertical structure with numbered, escalating levels organises the entire narrative, and progress is measured in altitude. Each floor has distinct rules and a gate.

    Tutorial Zone/Starting Area

A bounded early region with reduced stakes teaches the world's mechanics to protagonist and reader simultaneously, usually ending with a graduation event that closes it permanently.

    Weak-to-Strong Protagonist

The protagonist begins at or below the floor of their world's power structure and ascends over the course of the series. The starting weakness must be genuine and socially consequential.

System Apocalypse

Also known as:
World Integration
The Great Collapse

A game-like system is imposed on the real world without warning, killing most of the population and converting the survivors into participants. Civilisation ends and the tutorial begins.

Why it works

It combines apocalypse fiction's stakes with progression fiction's rewards, and the reader's familiarity with the modern world makes every rule change instantly legible.

How it fails

The old world is forgotten by chapter five. Grief, infrastructure, and the sheer strangeness of the transition are the premise's richest material and are usually discarded.

Fresh take

Keep a functioning remnant of the old institutions — a hospital, a council, a school — operating under the new rules.
