Terms of Service

Effective date: October 12, 2026

These Terms are an agreement between you and WritingHabit LLC, a Utah limited liability company (“WritingHabit”, “we”, “us”). They cover writinghabit.app, studio.writinghabit.app and our browser extension and plugins (together, the “Service”). By using the Service you agree to them. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information.

Who can use WritingHabit

You must be 13 or older to use WritingHabit, including through a school account. If you are under 18, you need a parent or guardian's permission, or your school's, if your school provides your account.

Your account

Give us accurate details, keep your sign-in safe, and tell us straight away if you think someone else has used your account. You are responsible for what happens under your account.

Your writing is yours

You own everything you write in WritingHabit. You give us permission to store it, back it up, and show it to the people you choose to share it with, only so that we can run the Service for you. That permission ends when you delete the writing or your account, apart from the time it takes for backups to expire (see the Privacy Policy). We don't claim any ownership of your work, and we don't use it to train AI.

You are responsible for what you post. Only post work you have the right to share, and don't post anything that breaks someone else's copyright, privacy or other rights.

Using the Service fairly

Don't:

  • break the law, or use the Service to harass, threaten or harm anyone;
  • post someone else's private information without their permission;
  • try to get into accounts, projects or data that aren't yours;
  • upload malware, or interfere with or overload the Service;
  • copy the Service in bulk with automated tools, or inflate word counts and leaderboards dishonestly.

Subscriptions and payment

Some features need a paid subscription. The price is shown before you pay, and payments are handled by Stripe. A subscription renews automatically until you cancel it; you can cancel at any time in Settings, and it stays active until the end of the period you paid for. If you think you were charged in error, contact us.

Schools and organizations

A school, district or other organization can provide WritingHabit accounts to its members under a written agreement with us.

  • School accounts. When a school provides your account, the school controls it: it can add and remove students, download their work, and ask us to delete their accounts. Student information belongs to the school, and we handle it as the Privacy Policy's Schools and students section describes. A school gives accounts only to students aged 13 and older. School accounts are for schoolwork, have full access to WritingHabit at no cost to the student, and are never offered purchases or upgrades.
  • Community organizations. A writing group or other sponsor can pay for its members' accounts. You still own your account and your writing, you choose whether to join, and no one acting for the organization can delete your account.
  • A signed agreement comes first. If an organization has signed an agreement with us, including a student data privacy agreement, and it conflicts with these Terms, that agreement controls for that organization and its members. Nothing in these Terms, including “Disclaimer” and “Limitation of liability” below, reduces our obligations under such an agreement, including our obligations to protect student data, to report a breach, and to indemnify.

Our Service

The Service itself, including its design, code, features and name, is ours and our licensors', and is protected by law. You may not use our name or logo without our written permission.

Ending your account

You can delete your account at any time in Settings, which deletes your writing; download anything you want to keep first. A school account is deleted by, or at the request of, the school.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these Terms, or that puts other people or the Service at risk. Where we can, we will tell you why and give you a chance to download your writing first. If we ever shut the Service down, we will give at least 30 days' notice so you can take your writing with you.

Disclaimer

We work hard to keep WritingHabit running and your writing safe, but the Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we make no promises beyond those in these Terms and the Privacy Policy, including any implied promise that the Service is fit for a particular purpose or will always be available or free of errors. Keep your own copies of work that matters to you. This section does not limit anything we have promised in a signed agreement with a school or other organization.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, WritingHabit and its members, employees and agents are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data or goodwill, arising from your use of the Service or your inability to use it.

This section does not limit: liability that the law does not allow us to limit; our liability for our own gross negligence or wilful misconduct; or any obligation we have under a signed agreement with a school or other organization, including obligations about the protection, misuse or unauthorized disclosure of student data and to indemnify.

Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Utah, and disputes will be heard in the state or federal courts located in Utah, unless a signed agreement with a school or other organization says otherwise. If a court finds part of these Terms unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce a right straight away, we haven't given it up.

Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. We will change the date at the top, and for a change that matters we will give at least 7 days' notice by email or in the app before it takes effect. Organizations with a signed agreement will be told in advance, and a change to these Terms does not change that agreement. If you keep using the Service after a change takes effect, you accept the new Terms; if you don't accept them, you can delete your account.

Affiliate program

We run an affiliate program that pays commission for referring new writers. If you join it, the affiliate terms apply as well, and:

  • follow the law and our brand guidelines when promoting WritingHabit;
  • don't mislead anyone, and never promote WritingHabit to students through a school account;
  • we may approve or decline applications, change commission rates and rules, and suspend or end an affiliate account;
  • commission that has not been earned under the program rules when an affiliate account ends is forfeited.
