Genre tropes with example books, browsable by genre

    Class and Aspiration

A character moves between classes and belongs fully to neither, fluent in both vocabularies and trusted in neither room. The tension is permanent rather than resolvable.

    Fragmented Chronology

Events are presented out of sequence so that meaning accumulates by juxtaposition rather than causation. Order is an argument about what matters.

    Generational Divide

Two or more generations of a family hold incompatible assumptions about duty, ambition, or identity, and the incompatibility cannot be argued away because each was formed by different conditions.

    Grief Without Resolution

A loss is not processed, redeemed, or explained; the book follows a person continuing in its presence. Recovery is not the arc, and may not be available.

    Illness and Care

A character's illness reorganises a household, and the person providing care undergoes their own unacknowledged transformation. Medical detail is rendered plainly.

    Marriage Under Pressure

A long relationship is examined through accumulated small compromises rather than a single crisis. The conflict is chronic and the resolution, if any, is partial.

    Place as Character

A specific geography — a marsh, a city block, a farm, an island — exerts sustained influence on the characters and receives the descriptive attention normally reserved for people.

    The Book Within the Book

A text inside the novel — a manuscript, a memoir, a translation — comments on, contradicts, or generates the outer narrative. The reader is made aware of the act of construction.

    The Ensemble Community Portrait

A place rather than a person is the protagonist, with chapters distributed among residents whose lives intersect obliquely. The community's shape emerges from accumulation.

    The Uneventful Life Examined

A deliberately unremarkable existence is given full novelistic attention, with the argument that ordinary life contains sufficient material. Plot events are minor and consequential.

    The Withheld Confession

A character carries an admission they never make, and the book's structure is organised around the absence. The reader may learn it; the other characters do not.

    Unreliable Memory

A narrator recounts the past with a self-serving or defensive distortion they may not be aware of. Unlike the mystery version, the deception has no criminal purpose — it is how the person survives their own life.

Literary

Place as Character

Also known as:
The Landscape Speaks
Rooted Fiction

A specific geography — a marsh, a city block, a farm, an island — exerts sustained influence on the characters and receives the descriptive attention normally reserved for people.

Why it works

It provides continuity across a long timespan, gives the prose a legitimate object for lyricism, and lets the setting deliver mood without an authorial narrator.

How it fails

Description accumulates without function. Landscape must constrain behaviour, not just decorate it.

Fresh take

Have the place change irreversibly halfway through and make the second half about the loss of a setting.
