Class Ascent

A character moves upward through a rigid social structure, acquiring the manners, debts, and enemies that come with the new position. What they leave behind is the cost.

Dual Timeline

Two narratives in different periods run in parallel, usually a historical thread and a present-day investigation into it. The modern strand's discoveries are timed against the historical strand's disclosures.

Forbidden Correspondence

Written communication that must be concealed — between lovers, conspirators, or across a prohibited boundary — carries the plot and constitutes the evidence that could destroy everyone.

Migration and Arrival

Characters leave one country for another and negotiate language, labour, and belonging in a place that requires them and does not want them. The journey is usually the shortest part.

Occupation and Resistance

A population lives under foreign or authoritarian control and some portion resists, at costs borne largely by people who did not volunteer. Collaboration is a spectrum, not a category.

Plague and Epidemic

Disease moves through a community, and the response — quarantine, blame, faith, flight — reveals the society's structure. Medicine is limited and often harmful.

Real Historical Figure in the Cast

An actual historical person appears as a character, constrained by the record but interpreted by the author. Their presence certifies the period and imposes an obligation of fairness.

The Buried Family Secret

A previous generation concealed something — a birth, a crime, a betrayal, a name — and a descendant uncovers it. The secret's power comes from the effort spent maintaining it.

The Home Front

The novel covers a war from the perspective of civilians — rationing, absence, conscription notices, occupation — rather than combat. The front is a rumour that arrives by post.

The Servant's-Eye View

The story is told by domestic staff or other subordinate workers who see everything and are seen by no one. Access without standing is the narrative position.

The Woman Who Cannot Practise Her Profession

A character with genuine expertise is excluded from practising it by law or custom, and must work through intermediaries, pseudonyms, or unofficial channels. The obstacle is structural, not personal.
